New Version of Harpoon 3

Post by Gator » 14 Jul 2006, 07:52

I just saw this today - however, it's been out a few weeks. They just released the new version of Harpoon. I'm planning to get it since I've owned every version of Harpoon (including the table-top version).

The main improvement here in this version is that it's now multiplayer. It can take up to 6 players.

It's very well-supported and has many scenarios available. It takes place in the modern time-frame and is real-time. It's like a naval version of Steel Beasts Pro PE (except this only costs $50).

Anyone else interested?

Is this a re-release of the Original Harpoon 3, or did they add new content (ie mods, updated graphics, etc..) to the original Harpoon 3 and are re-releasing it?

I remember them working on Harpoon 4 a while back but it got cancelled or something to that effect.

this is a rework of the game...but i do not think the graphics got a big overhaul.

"New features include, multiplayer support, third party databases, scenario editors, and over 120 pre-built scenarios!

"If you want flashy graphics, go play some mindless console game. If you want tactical depth and a range of scenarios, play Harpoon 3 Advanced Naval Warfare." - Out of Eight (7/8) "

I have never played any of the Harpoon games, but the closest game I have played is Fleet Command (I loved that game) and Dangerous Waters (no time to sit and learn how to play it). In any case, I may have to get this. Where will I find the time to play...?

So are you getting this too Steel? Sounds like it's right up your alley, but I'm not sure if you like Naval sims.

I notice in the review it says something about an upgrade. Is this an upgrade (requires original Harpoon 3) or is this a stand alone new version?

it is standalone. If you bought a previous version recently, they give you a discount.

it's like playing the "map screen" of dangerous waters with the autocrew turned on for all the subsystems and you can command waaaay more than one platform at a time. there's no micromanagement of contact detection, etc. You are the captain/admiral.

I think I'll give it a shot. I'll get the DL+CD version, as I don't really like DL only stuff.

I'll order it when I get home from work, so I can DL it from there. I'll mess with it over the weekend and hopefully learn something.

Gator, check your PMs if you haven't already.

no, i won't be getting it any time soon. i know the type of simulation it is but i have Fleet Command and with the free updates from the naval warfare simulation group i think it is more then adequate, and they have even updated the graphics (not to, say, DW standards but better than harpoon). my other consideration is time available...

one point that might get me to consider it - is Fleet Command only two players? i don't remember...

I'm really liking H3ANW so far, there is SO much to learn and the tutorials are very in depth. Maybe I'm a slow reader or I am just trying to absorb what I am learning, but I spent a good 2 hours on the first 3 tutorials. Good stuff.

I am gonna try to get Fleet Command working on my computer, I have heard that there are some problems getting it installed on Win XP machines. If I can find my CDs, I'll give it a try. For now, I'll stay focused on H3ANW and see if can actually make better progress than I did with DW.

I think my favorite part is setting up and launching massive carrier air strikes.

I played a lot of H2 and a bit of H1 back in the day.
I still have H2 sitting on a HD somewhere, don't know if it will work under XP!

Anyway, if I wasn't so swamped I might consider getting it, especially with MP.
