I got my copy today, YIPEEE!! The manual is about 1 1/4" thick, 500+ pages, spiral bound for ease of reading and flipping through pages. It comes on 2 CDs and there is no CD key (Don't know if that's good or bad). Looks like I am going to have a busy night tonight. :D

Anyone else get their copy yet?

That's insane! I got my copy the same day as Nem and Kodiak? Hell.

Anyway. I got spanked in my first non-demo mission. I detected the Chinese Han and dropped a torp on him, it missed. While I was lining up my second shot, he sunk a merchant. He dragged me all over the ocean before I located him too.

I can sense that we'll each have to really specialize in a particular platform to be any good at it. It's a "survey" in a sense with 7 playable platform, but I don't get the sense that any of it is simplified.

I'm leaning toward the non-sub platforms so far, however I've only played as the helo. Even a simulated sub makes me shiver.

Okay, well I have already decided which platform I intend to run with, I just need some guidance as to which one of two - 688i or SeaWolf? Anyone like to offer up where I would get my most fun?

Hey, I'm still gonna be around. Until I am up and running at a decent level of competency, I will be doing most of my DW offline really. Any online stuff will be strictly when there is nothing else going on. 8)

Well, I just won my first mission - this is definitely a game of stealth!
I discovered after saving out that one of my targets was a contact I had already marked. So, I turned about and simply went after him. Stood still in the water was the Daphne SS; it wasn't until I accidentally fired off my first torpedo a little too early that the Daphne began to turn and run. But it was obviously too late - a minute later he took the hit (reported by the noise of an explosion in the area of contact S2, not sure whether it was hull or con tower. I noticed later two holes, and there was reporting of a secondary later. You can watch the contact sink all the way to the bottom, with all the accompanying noises. 8) After that I continued to waypoint 2, and completed my patrol.

Well my intitial look at DW has me agreeing with Gator on the complexity of the Subs YIKES!. I like the SH60 but i think i might be taking a closer look at the P3 Orion, as my specialised platform but i will be looking into learning one of the subs soon as this was my primary reason for getting DW since i liked SH2 so much SH3 will be a definite buy for me also i think.

But as things stand at the moment i will be getting my head around DW big time so that i can get as much of it mastered as soon as poss and will be looking into mission making this week as i have a weeks holiday this week (could not have asked for better timing there i think).

So i will hopefully have something to for us to play with soon so we can all learn our prefered platform OL together. (best way i think and more fun!)

ALL DW owners please state which platform you would like placed in missions and i will see if i can cook something up that will be good for us all.

But i think that it would be better if we played opposing sides rather than Co-op for DW as i think IMHO that might be too boring with all of us on the same side chasing to find the 2 or 3 bad guys first rather than a 2 v 2, all i will say is that head to head was great in SH2 OL at sub sim and i had a brilliant time with that setup.

Well, I have to disagree on just the one point here, and that is the opposing sides thing. I'm not purporting that it would be easy to set-up, but certainly would be better for us all to take part together hunting down vessels, done against a not-too-aggressive enemy we would have time to plough through things bit by bit. I am already aware that the possibility to PAUSE the sim is available to the host.

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one Kodiak, i have always found it more fun (and satisfaction in getting the kill) in any OL game to be up against real opponents rather than a mathmatically generated algorithym in a line of programming.

For training purposes Co-op would be a good idea as Gator suggested in the available pilots thread just to locate and get a firing solution on your target, no killing allowed just for training.

But you can get the Co-op side of things in a head to head if we can get 4 or more player OL for this in a 2 V 2 since the 2 players on each side will have to team together and share info on the opposing team to get that final kill.

On another point we all know that AI have their weaknesses no matter how good the programming is they are either not good enough and have weak spots that once found can be exploited or are far too good and know where you are no matter what you do ala Lomac style.

I know none of us know whether the AI in DW is biased either way on that scale yet but for training CO-OP yes maybe but for missions OL i'd prefer Head to Head with AI elements thrown in to make it more interesting.

But i think we can discuss this as a group and see where we all stand and make missions to cater for both sides.

Anyway i am sure even with my inital try outs with the stock missions that we are going to have a lot of fun with this.

I was talking about training purposes. And it has to be understood that most of us have not taken part in any sub or naval sim to date - it's no good someone in a completely different platform instructing someone else how to find THEM, that won't work, especially with noobs. There has to be a certain element of monkey see monkey do, follow me through this. because what happens is this sort of conversation:

Do you have him on the scope yet?
No.
Well go to screen XXX, is there anything showing up there?
Erm . . . . . . yes a blue circle, is that you there?
No, I should be west of you and showing up as a red square.
Which way is west? Am I on the right screen?
I dunno, what can you see infront of you?
I can't see anything there aren't any windows on this thing, where is the outside 3D view for this . . . .
I am right infront of you, and pinging you, can you hear that?

Anyway, am sure you get the idea. My solution, you have the student and the instructor on the same vessel or vessels running parallel with one another so as to see the same things really at the same time and so on.

As for online game experience - I don't think we'll have much trouble finding anyone happy to play the enemy. But against each other is fine by me for online PLAY, but not training. The aim of training is to learn, and as far as I am concerned the noob will only get frustrated as the experienced go about 'showing them how it's done' or in my opinion - showing off! frayed tempers, arguments and people not playing anymore is where that's at for sure. No, the AI may not be all they're cracked-up to be, but they are somewhat more forgiving as you attempt to come to grips with a new game.

LOL @ Steel!

Agreed Kodiak but i think that we might have a small problem with that training format in that not everybody will want to use the same platform and therefore no trainer trainee format can be arranged.

But i think that Gagtor had a good idea for practicing our own individual platforms by creating a mission with our selected platforms in it and everyone just leaqrning there own platform by getting contacts and finding everyone else on the map we can then confirm our location when one of us thinks they have a firing solution on the other.

It's going to be a lot of trial and error, but i am starting to get the hang of the P3 it's not much different from the SH60 just faster and with more weapons available.

Also found out in onew mission that the Subs can be really sneaky buggers. In one P3 mission a French Sub gets taken over by terrorists and you have to find it and sink it before they melt the core down.

Thing is the buggers used a oil tanker as cover and were cruising along underneath it to mask themselves, took me ages to work out where they were and it was only through use of the MAD/SAD that it spotted the SAD also went nuts when i overflew the tanker, and since the SAD is deigned to only detect submerged targets this aroused my suspision and on closer examination of my sonobouy contacts i could tell that some of them were picking up 2 target in the vicinity of the tanker, now all i had to do was target the Sub accurately so i dont sink the tanker with a Torp!!

Harder than it looks (OK I SUNK THE TANKER THEN THE SUB! )

Anyway im liking this a lot more everytime i play it.

Yesterday I took the FFG/Romeo against Kodiak in a seawolf ... I never got a sniff until he went nuts shooting torps as the Indian CVV and crashing his hull into the sea floor.

Those subs can be a b*tch if they don't do something silly.

Don't the subs have echo sounders? That should make it harder to crash. BTW, is there an OL version of the manual I can download?

The manual is available in the docs of the demo, or I could send it to you on disk, or you could just go buy the damn game!

Could you stick it on disc with FF3 please?

I'm not gonna get the game for a while, as I'm trying to raise £700 at the moment.
