As a single player game, I would say it's similar to MW4 and MW3. It's not difficult if you are a good battlemech pilot. The friendly AI pilots are good, the enemy, not so much. It might be a lot of fun in multiplayer mode, if it ever comes to that.

Ut-oh I hope they get the bugs worked out , I can’t pilot a Mech with a mouse. O_o

<Quote> MW5 Mercenaries launched with only partial support for a limited set of peripherals. If you're having trouble getting your flight stick, HOTAS, or rudder pedals working correctly, you're not alone.

Not really Brons’ we both used the CH Gamestick back in the day. You just can’t play Mech Warrior without it. But I did like playing Freelancer with a mouse.

I had a newer CH Gamestick that was hardly broken in - I haven’t used for years.. I seen it in my filing cabinet several times wondering if I would ever need it again - and left it behind when I moved. Nowadays I wish I had it , some of those Flight Simulator games today look really good , and I’m sure it’s even better with a gamestick - to get the feel for it. Fox -1

Although I’m pretty sure I’m done with Mech Warrior. Besides my older brother Strikr and possibly Steel aka Hammer - I've read all the Battletech books from start to finish. I believe It was all over with after ELH invaded the home planet of Clan Smoke Jaguars. Then a peace treaty was called between the Inner Sphere and the The Clans - who were originally descended from the self-exiled remnants of the Star League Defense Force.

After that - A new era began with the low budget Mercenaries who were hired to settle petty disputes between back water planets. The highlight of the story was when the Mercenaries found some Clan Tech that they could integrate with their own Mechs… and then I lost interest in the Battletech saga all together - until MechWarrior 2 came out. After many years - Now it’s come full circle , and were back to the Mercenaries again.

In late 3060, an Inner Sphere task force, code-named SERPENT, struck at the Smoke Jaguar homeworld Huntress. The Jaguar garrison commander, Russou Howell, had only two Provisional Galaxies to withstand the onslaught of ten elite Inner Sphere regiments. Both sides wreaked enormous damage upon another. Howell used the opportunity to unleash a deadly new war machine. Dubbed ProtoMechs, these miniature 'Mechs were piloted by washed-out aerospace pilots using the new Enhanced Imaging system. The EI system coupled with the improved armor and weaponry allowed the ProtoMech pilots to wreak considerable damage on the Serpent forces before they were destroyed. After several days of almost non-stop combat, Task Force Serpent crushed the last of the Jaguar garrison forces.

Task Force Serpent's respite from battle was short-lived when the remnants of the Smoke Jaguar Inner Sphere forces returned to Huntress for repairs and refitting. Shocked at finding their homeworld in the hands of Inner Sphere troops, the Smoke Jaguars, led by Galaxy Commander Hang Mehta, launched a brutal counterattack. With barely two Galaxies of troops, the Jaguars hammered mercilessly against the elite Serpent troops. Several days into the battle, ilKhan Lincoln Osis and his bodyguard unit arrived on Huntress to coordinate the counterattack. Both sides sustained losses in excess of sixty percent, with many pilots dead and hundreds of 'Mechs lain strewn across the battlefields.

The Jaguars launched one final counterattack with their remaining forces. The battle was almost lost for the Inner Sphere if not for the skill and valor of the Eridani Light Horse. The ELH troops held the line but at a tremendous cost. Their leader, General Ariana Winston, was killed in the final moments of the battle. Winston's death marked the turning point for the campaign. Prince Victor Steiner-Davion, leading another task group to Huntress, arrived in-system just before the final battle began. The fresh troops he led quickly hunted down and eliminated all Jaguar resistance within a few days.

And for all you GDL Scum out there..

Decision at Thunder Rift, by William H. Keith, Jr., is the first book of the Saga of the Gray Death Legion, and the first novel ever to be published for BattleTech.

It tells the story of the young Grayson Death Carlyle and the events that led to the founding of his famous mercenary unit.

Personally - One of my most memorable Battletech novels was Falcon Guard. With Aidan Pryde

The Falcon Guards were one of the oldest and most respected units in the Clan Jade Falcon. During the beginning of the Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere. In the first three waves Clan Jade Falcon captured five worlds and destroyed four enemy regiments, including the 17th Skye Rangers, 2nd Grave Walkers, and 12th Star Guards second regiment. They also nearly captured Victor Steiner-Davion on Trell.

Prologue

In her darkest fantasies, Star Captain Joanna saw herself dying from a projectile ripping through her body, or incinerated in a BattleMech, or destroyed by a lucky shot from an enemy MechWarrior’s weapon. In her wilder nightmares, she imagined being murdered in her bed by a vile freebirth, or mauled by a bloodthirsty creature on some planet where she was stranded, or perhaps ejecting successfully from the cockpit of her ’Mech only to drown in a deep lake before she could free herself from the restraints of her ejection seat. Once, she had dreamed that the best death would come in heroic combat or even during a Trial of Bloodright, where she would meet her end in a ferocious final round of the competition for a Bloodname.

But now her dreams had faded, for she had become an old warrior. She still piloted a ’Mech as a warrior of Clan Jade Falcon, but no longer would any Bloodnamed warrior sponsor her for a slot in any Trial of Bloodright. Without a nomination, Joanna’s only hope for eligibility was to take part in a Grand Melee, but she would never stoop to that. (Joanna knew of only one warrior who had eventually won his Bloodname via that route, and the man was high on the long list of people she despised.) Her best hope now was cremation after death so that her ashes would return to the same sibko system that had spawned her existence, to be blended with the amniotic fluid of the artificial wombs.

Without a Bloodname, Star Captain Joanna could never achieve the ultimate goal of all Clan warriors, the inclusion of her genes in the sacred gene pool. Letting that dream die had been the most difficult of all, even after Joanna realized she would never win a Bloodname. Since then she had added an even more dread possibility to her fantasies about death, this one of surviving to the time when she would die in her bed either from disease or sheer old age. Of all the ends she could imagine, that was the most appalling.

Despite all the conjectures, Joanna had never foreseen being buried alive while trapped in the cockpit of her ’Mech, which was exactly where she was at this moment. The Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere had been going on for nine months now, and Joanna had just been assigned as a replacement to the Falcon Guards.

I did get MW5 and I could not play it with my mouse, Although I only went through the training session and from what I seen , it looks more like boxy low budget Mercenary Mach’s on a back water planet. Where did the Clans go? Why couldn’t they create a MechWarrior game with sleek Clan Mach’s that had everything you would need to go into battle with. ? I never understood the MWOL gifts - does that mean you have to earn - or buy special weapons in order to play the game more efficiently.
