X-Wing Alliance

Post by Hammer »

Folks,
Gator and I are cranking up this game, and are definitely going to try some online ASAP. It runs excellently on XP (it even recognizes my HOTAS properly if I have my GM2 plugged in as well - most games, even modern ones have a hard time with that). Gator and I are running it in 1600x1200 and it looks pretty damn good! BUT, there are a whole slew of add ons that have even better looking craft to replace the stock ones, and even some additional craft... There are a lot of missions and a few campaign add ons as well. Be advised, it is a pretty darn good simulation (yes, I said sim) of Star Wars space combat - and it is fun as hell!!! I picked up my copy for $9.99 at Gamestop - you can also order it online. Multiplayer with up to 8 (some say 16) folks - dogfight, coop, and team coop... There is also an Episode 1 shipset, Babylon 5 shipset, and a Wing Commander shipset (not sure how finished any of these are).

We are also looking at Freespace 2. The source code was released to the community and there is quite a project working on improving things in the game. You can also download the bulk of the game (fully functional) online, although it is missing music, voice acting, hi-res textures, cutscenes and maybe a few other things. There is another place where you can download some of the missing pieces - music, hi-res tectures, voice acting, and maybe a couple of other things. Cutscenes are still missing and I am trying to track them down. The good thing about FS2 is that there are several mods for the game - Star Wars, Wing Commander, Babylon 5, Robotech, the original Freespace missions/campaign, and others. Freespace 2 is probably the definitive space combat sim and is a pretty cool game as well.

I have been jonesing for a Space Combat sim since I played X-Wing vs Tie fighter and found it lacking (multi-player only, and back in those days online waas not that great). That is my motivation here. If anyone wishes to join me, drop a note and I will post links...

Kat,
Yep, X-Wing Alliance has the cool sounds and all...just no lightsabers since you are in a spacecraft. :(

Links I have for X-Wing Alliance so far:
http://www.emperorshammer.net/
http://forums.xwlegacy.net/index.php
http://www.xwaupgrade.com/
http://xwing.wz.cz/
http://www.starvipers.org/nCSA/

http://www.darksaber.freeserve.co.uk/
http://www.antilles100.freeserve.co.uk/
http://abolisher.xwlegacy.net/main.htm

Some may not be very active any more, the XWAU is kinda confusing as to what to add... I am thinking get all the craft from Darksaber's page, and then fill in the gaps with the stuff from XWAU or others... Make sure you patch to 1.2 of your game does not install that way from the cd's.

XWA

Post by Softball »

Thanks for the links Steel.

Found my CDs and installed the game, patched to 1.2. However, I have not had to put in CD#2 yet? Maybe that's for the Campaign? Not sure. I just ran some Skirmishes and ran my game at 1280x1024 res, the 1600x1200 made the text way too small for me to read, so I will stick with the 1280 setting for now. It's getting late, so I will check out those links tomorrow. I can't wait to try XWA online. :D

See ya

Yah - I have to lean into the screen to read the text!!! Must be getting old! I will try bumping it down to see if it is better...

CD 2 is not needed until you get further into the campaign...

Let's standardize on the addons or else we will not be compatible for MP... We should prolly just try it stock first...

(I must be young enough to read it easily at 1600x1200 )

Question

Post by Softball »

Ok, this is an off the wall question, but is there an Editor for XWA? I have read on a few forums that there is something called AlliEd (Alliance Editor?). Is this something that comes with XWA, or is there a place I can DL the latest version from? I will keep looking myself, but if anyone has any detailed info, I appreciate it if you could post a link here.

Thanks.

Yah, 2.02 - sorry...

There is an editor, but for the full version the guy wants $10 for it... Maybe we share it?

well, i added all of the XWAU models, and I get some serious stuttering, both at 1024x768 and 1200x1024... I can not imagine it is my machine??? I mean, I run IL2 in pretty high detail... I wonder if the XWA engine has issues with this stuff?
