Freespace2

Post by Hammer »

Well, if you want to try it I can tell you where to get the .iso's.

It is open sourced, and a lot of changes are being made...blah, blah, blah. I did this once before... It is a great game, and there are more than a few mods, missions and campaigns as well. These folks say 8 coop players works well.

I can not wait for the Wing Commander mod to be done...and the Bablylon5 mod is looking for beta testers. Anyone game?

Here is a link to my post asking questions:

I know Nemesis, Softball and I at least have the game already...

I've got it as well.

I'm up for any game that we actually get together to play.

Yup i got this one and i believe there already is a full Babylon 5 mod out there, Drunken Pirate was really engrosed by Freespace 2 a short while back and downloaded a whole host of mods and applications that can be used to mod it yourself and i distinctly remember him raving about the Babylon 5 mod he had found and this was about 6+ months ago, So maybe this is a different crew with a new mod but i will find out for you and try and get the FS2 editor i know he had that allowed you to change almost anything in the game yourself.

B5 has been getting released in stages... I think they are close to final hence the request for beta testers...

There are tools to chnage most every aspect of the game now, and since the source code is released that has been enhanced a lot as well...

This is probably the jumping off point for all of it:

From here you can find the links for everything Freespace... Especially look for lightspeed's doc's as well as the wiki. Links to both should be in the thread I started at those forums (link above) and in this one:

I think I'll d/ld this mod as well!

I got one a while back, VERY tough, I believe it was called the Aeos Affair. You're fighting SC Rakshasas, and even an SCv Moloch in the first mission!
"...and the bombs go BOOM and the walls crash down, bang, bang, boom, boom, war is a terrible thing, OK?!..."

Here is a list of everything you should need to mod up Freespace 2 guys.

Source Code Project website, not as updated as the forums are but contains links to relevant stuff.
http://scp.indiegames.us/news.php

Souce Code Project forums, check often for new builds of the exe,vp files and the launcher.
http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/ ... forumid=50

What you need:

Executable file
Main exe file, package should contain 2 versions, one with an "r" and another with a "d" at the end, put them both in your main FS2 directory.
Download - http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/late ... er5000.rar
Subforum - http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/ ... forumid=97
check that forum often for latest builds, they are named by the assembly date. eg. the file I linked was released 15/12/2004 (most recent) usually about 1-2 a month depending on what is discovered/fixed and added.

Launcher
This is needed to start the game, to play the game start this program. The first time you run it you need to select an exe file in your main FS2 folder. select the "r" version, the "d" version is for debugging. after that go through the tabs and select the options you want, don'tclick the registry tab because it gives an error, this is normal apparently and deliberate. If you have an ATI card deselect "specular lighting" since it does not work with ATI card running Catalyst version over 4.4 :( I recommend you just select "all featured on" for the first run, then you can configure stuff after that. Try replaying the same missions to see the differences of what stuff does. After you have configured the eye candy select "run"
Launcher 5.2 file required at this point contact me to get it.
drop all files (1 exe and 3 dll's) in yer main FS2 folder.

Media files
These are what contain all the new effects and stuff. Just drop it into your FS2 folder.
Download - http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mediavps/mv_zpack.exe
After you odwnload this you need to extract it to your desktop and rename the extracted file to "fs2_open.vp" and then place in your FS2 folder.

That's all.

All information kindly supplied by the Drunken Pirate.

is that 12/15 build released? if not i would not recommend trying it... we should stick with released versions only. if it is released, good to go.

btw - the only thing you really NEED is the new .exe and launcher. BUT, if you want the new eye candy, the new media vp's are the way to go... there is a new 3.6.5 media vp release, but there were some issues and i have been waiting until they ironed them out before getting all the info together to let eveyone know so we can try.

for MP, there are a few other things to do as well...

have you dl'ed, installed and run any of this Nem???

Will be doing so soon, all the info was sent to me via Drunken Pirate who is an avid player of FS2 and is up to date with what's what in FS2, so i thought i'd pass on the info he gave me since i know there are a few people including yourself Steel that are interested in this.

When i have given it a test run myself i'll let you all know the results, Drunken Pirate did tell me today that there was a new release launched yesterday but it is very much a new Beta test version with a lot of bugs and not for those wishing to play a stable game but previous release is supposed to be very stable and virtually bug free.

One thing Pirate did tell me that he forgot to say in his summary, is that to run the game without a possible CTD in one of the missions you will need to disable the in game visual comms panel in the HUD options as this causes a CTD when a particular missile test mission is completed other than that he says it is a very stable and great mod for FS2

so that sounds like the 3.6.5 beta release. i read up on the rlease notes in the forum today - there are actually two missions that will crash with in cockpit video comms on...

the 3.6 release is probably best to stick with for now...

there is a new media vp release - i want to wait until that is straight, then start testing...especially for mp.

is drunken pirate a member or former member of a mechwarrior 4 unit??? all of their call signs started with drunken...

No he has not been a member of a mechwarrior unit.

He is one of the main administrators at

http://www.FPScentral.com

Anything you want to know about FPS games that are listed on their forums he will either know about or be able to find out about.

Great guy, always helpfull and a major Battlefield 1942(Desert Combat mod) and FS2 nut.

Battlefield 2 looks good. Might need to add that to the shopping list for next year
