Intel I9 or Intel Core Ultra Processors

Post by Grifter »

I assume for gaming purposes, the I9 CPU is perfect. The Ultra processors are for using AI and unnecessary for common home office tasks and playing video games. Yes?

I have an i7 and it works great for me. The i9 would have been overkill. I think most gamers who go the Intel route don't have i9's. i7 would be more common.

Hi Xpen,

Didn't see that anyone responded to this query. Thanks for doing so. Yeah, I'm thinking the i9 is overkill right now, but may increase the longeivity of the investment overall? Make my 3 year computer a 5 year one? Or does it not work that way? I'm really not well versed in such matters.

Well it's a really hard thing to predict. Would an i9 give you more years? Maybe. What if 3 years from now they invent a processor that is 2X as fast as a top of the line i9 today, and they start pushing games that need that horsepower? Then then it wouldn't matter whether you bought an i7 or an i9, both might end up being obsolete. However, I would not necessarily expect that kind of advancement in performance. Intel actually has a history of deliberately slow walking the chip advancements that, while faster than the previous generation, are not as fast as they could have actually made them. This is likely so they can sell more chips over time, versus coming out with a high end chip now and getting less sales. This was true when the first 60 Mhz Pentium came out. They actually had working 100 Mhz chips already but purposely waited a few years.

yeah sorry i didnt see this post. Also i'm not a pc hardware guru so better left to the experts. :)

My PC is i67 - 12700 with 4070ti card and 64gb of ram. I can run things smoothly. I used to run things "pretty smoothly" with a lesser video card (3080) and 32gb of ram. I also have an nvme ssd on the mobo so that sped things up.

You guys need to switch to AMD like I did. For gaming, AMD has the clear edge.

I considered that Panzer. Maybe next upgrade. X-plane 12 and earlier versions do not play as nice with the AMD drivers and thats my go-to software so I'll likely stick with intel for now.

BTW Grifter, we all miss you on Wed nights!

Thanks all for your feedback. I’m going to have to build something this summer, which is an unexpected expense. I may go with an i9 or i7 depending on budget. Thanks, Xpen and others for sharing your thoughts.
